Sharon Shafran will be sharing the story of his brother, Shimri Shafran (10/12/72-11/5/92). In 1992, Ehud Barak, who was then the Chief of General Staff, observed Sayeret Matkal, the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit, conduct a final exercise in preparation for the intended assassination of Saddam Hussein. This exercise took place at the Tze’elim training base in the Negev. The plan was never executed due to a tragic accident that occurred during the exercise, which later came to be known as “the Tze’elim Bet Disaster.” This incident claimed the lives of five members of the team, including Shimri.
