About our Program

The Alpert JCC is the place to learn to swim in the Greater Long Beach area!

According to the Talmud (Kiddushin 29a), a parent must teach their child three things: Torah, how to earn a living, and how to swim. And through our swim program, the AJCC can help you give your child the swimming skills they need with competitive pricing and flexible scheduling.

We teach each student to swim with confidence using a 9-step swim program created by the American Red Cross (an organization with over 100 years of teaching and developing water safety programs) that will keep them safe in and around the water.

Preschool Aquatics Program

Levels 1-3

The Preschool Aquatics Program is designed to get young children comfortable in the water and begin to work on basic skills. Children learn arm and leg movements as well as breath control to help them not only feel safe in the water but love the time they spend there.

Program Objectives

Level 1

Swimmers are introduced to basic skills. These skills lay the foundation for developing water competency and the future skill development of swimming strokes. In addition, the swimmer will start to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around the water.

Level 2

Builds on the skills learned in Level 1 and gives swimmers success with fundamental skills, such as floating and basic locomotion.

Level 3

Builds on the skills in Level 2 and improves swimmers’ coordination of simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions.

Learn-to-Swim Program

Levels 1-6

The Learn-to-Swim Program focuses on building skills one step at a time by giving students the opportunity to master one element before moving on to the next.

  • All instructors are certified in Water Safety by the American Red Cross
  • Participants will receive a booklet, shirt, and sticker upon completion for each level along with a certificate.
